Postnatal Counselling
Postnatal counselling is an effective treatment where there are difficulties such as postnatal depression, anxiety, post traumatic stress after childbirth, attachment or bonding difficulties, relationship issues and other problems in adjusting to parenthood. It can also be helpful for emotional difficulties during pregnancy.
As with other forms of counselling and psychotherapy, the aim is to offer a non-judgmental and confidential environment where you are able to talk freely so as to reflect, explore, and resolve personal distress and life issues. The therapist listens to you and helps you to make sense of what it is you are struggling with.
If you have not experienced therapy before it can seem quite daunting, our therapists know this and will do their best to make you feel at ease and whatever the issue you will always be met with dignity and respect.
Our model of therapy is a flexible, personalised model, informed by the approaches that are recommended by NICE and have the best evidence base, including Interpersonal Therapy, which has been shown to be very helpful for those experiencing postnatal distress, mentalisation which has been found to be very helpful for issues around bonding and attachment, and EMDR, which is particularly effective for birth trauma.
In a recent analysis of the postnatal support that we provided in a project for the Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationships, it was found that more than 93% of mothers were less depressed after 12 weeks of counselling and for those who had experienced difficulties bonding with their baby, more than 89% had improved.
